Precision Shaft RFQ Checklist

A useful precision-shaft RFQ identifies the released drawing and revision, material and blank condition, heat-treatment requirements, functional datums, critical dimensions, inspection and reporting needs, annual demand, and delivery target. Providing these inputs helps engineering evaluate the complete route without assuming which journals, bores, splines, teeth, faces, or surface conditions control the part's function. Use this checklist before requesting a feasibility review, and mark any provisional requirement clearly so it can be resolved during quotation.

What engineering needs

Prepare the drawing package before quotation

The checklist below is procurement guidance, not a universal tolerance promise. Final manufacturability depends on the released drawing, material, heat treatment, geometry, datum structure, production volume, inspection plan, and any customer-specific standard or reporting rule.

Drawing and revision control

  • Dimensioned PDF plus STEP when available
  • Drawing number, revision, units and release date
  • Governing language, standard and edition
  • Datum reference frame and geometric-tolerance callouts
  • Functional interfaces that affect fit or assembly

Material and blank condition

  • Material grade and governing specification
  • Supply condition and certification requirements
  • Bar, tube, forged, cold-formed, or customer-supplied blank
  • Cleanliness, hardenability, or traceability requirements
  • Any restrictions on equivalent grades

Heat treatment and surface condition

  • Required process and final condition
  • Hardness locations and verification method
  • Case-depth definition, masking, or soft zones
  • Dimensions that apply before or after treatment
  • Coating, plating, cleanliness, or corrosion protection

Functional shaft features

  • Journals, bearing seats, shoulders and seal diameters
  • Bores, threads, tapers, grooves, cross holes and faces
  • Internal or external splines and gear teeth
  • Centers, pilot diameters and assembly interfaces
  • Required relationships between datums and features

Tolerance and surface-finish inputs

  • Nominal dimensions and total tolerance bands
  • Geometric tolerances with referenced datums
  • Surface-roughness parameter and evaluation rule
  • Required measurement method, gauge, or master
  • Sampling frequency and reporting format

Gear and spline definition

  • Governing standard and edition
  • Module or diametral pitch, pressure and helix angles
  • Tooth count, profile shift, modifications and grade
  • Required individual deviations or composite checks
  • Spline fit, class, gauge and analysis requirements

Inspection and quality records

  • Dimensional inspection report
  • Material and heat-treatment certificates
  • Hardness, case-depth, surface, or contour records
  • Gear or spline analysis report
  • First article, PPAP, control plan, or customer forms when contractually required

Volume, delivery and packaging

  • Prototype, launch and serial-production quantities
  • Estimated annual demand and expected program life
  • Requested delivery date and receiving location
  • Packaging, rust prevention, labeling and traceability
  • Customer-supplied tooling, gauges, or returnable packaging
Before you send the RFQ

Make open requirements visible

If a material, treatment, tolerance, inspection method, or delivery condition is still provisional, label it clearly. This is more useful than leaving it unstated because the open item can be evaluated during drawing review.
