Define the Handoff from Cast or Forged Blank to CNC Machining

The finished-part drawing does not fully define the condition of a cast or forged blank arriving for machining. A useful handoff identifies the blank specification, the responsible source, the surfaces available for location and the stock intended for removal. Incoming blank acceptance and finished-part acceptance need distinct requirements and records.

  • Separate blank and finished-part definitions
  • Agree supply and discrepancy responsibility
  • Identify locating surfaces and machining stock
  • Keep defect assessment project-specific

When buyers need this guide

Agree what is being supplied and what is being machined

Begin with the proposed supply arrangement rather than assuming it from the component name. Identify who is responsible for the blank, its applicable specification and any required material or treatment records. Customer-supplied, purchased or supplier-arranged blanks are possible arrangements to discuss, not interchangeable modes that are automatically accepted for every Jinhua project.

Define the condition at handoff: as-cast or as-forged, cleaned, treated, partly machined, or another specified state. Mark which surfaces remain in the blank condition and which will be finished. Keep responsibility for casting, forging, treatment and machining explicit; downstream machining does not imply ownership of the upstream equipment.

Key questions to clarify

Review stock relative to the features that must be finished

A nominal outside envelope does not show whether useful stock remains around every required bore, face or journal. Review the blank definition against the finished geometry and the proposed locating references. Identify surfaces where stock removal is planned and areas where the blank surface will remain.

For irregular blanks, ask how variation in the blank geometry will be evaluated before finishing starts. A nominal stock value should not be treated as proof that every blank will clean up. If the available stock or location is questionable, record the affected feature for engineering review; do not assume that a shifted machining origin resolves a product-definition requirement.

  • Identify the blank revision and its relationship to the finished drawing.
  • Mark the surfaces to be machined and those left untouched.
  • Ask which blank features will locate and support the first setup.
  • Record stock or location concerns before agreeing the route.

Make the first setup and later datum transfer understandable

The first setup may establish a face or bore that later operations use for location. Ask the process review to distinguish the initial blank references, the features created in that setup and the references used after repositioning. The final drawing datum is not assumed to be available on the incoming blank.

For thin or irregular sections, discuss where the workpiece can be supported and how clamping access affects the proposed operation sequence. This is a review question, not a promise of distortion-free machining. The fixture and sequence remain part-specific decisions.

Different setups do not inherently mean that a part is unacceptable, and a single setup does not inherently prove its accuracy. The relevant question is how the required feature relationships will be produced and checked under the agreed definition.

Preparation checklist

Build a compact handoff record

Use a record that connects the blank condition to the machining decision. It should let both parties answer what was supplied, what was reviewed and what remained unresolved. No fixed acceptance policy, supplier arrangement or inspection frequency is implied by this example.

  • Blank identity / revision and finished-part revision.
  • Proposed source and responsibility for supply and treatment.
  • Incoming condition, required records and identifying marks.
  • Locating/support surfaces and features to be established first.
  • Machining stock questions and any unresolved defect assessment.
  • Agreed incoming criteria, final criteria and discrepancy decision route.

Responsibility boundary

Separate incoming condition from final acceptance

Agree the incoming criteria using the blank drawing or specification and the final criteria using the finished-part definition. A blank accepted for machining has not yet passed the finished-part inspection. Conversely, an upstream certificate does not replace the required checks of machined features.

Where porosity, surface defects, thin walls, scale or treatment movement matter to the application, identify the relevant acceptance requirement and who will evaluate it. Do not impose one generic defect limit or inspection method on all castings and forgings. Pressure or sealing requirements, when applicable, need their own agreed scope; machining a sealing face does not prove leak performance.

For a discrepancy, agree who receives the finding, who may authorize a disposition and how the affected blanks remain identifiable. Rework, acceptance of a deviation or replacement must not be assumed from the existence of a machining order.

Review changed blanks before treating a repeat order as unchanged

A new source, changed blank revision or different treatment condition can alter the starting point even when the finished drawing is unchanged. Compare the change against locating access, stock, material records and the agreed acceptance requirements before reusing the previous route.

For example, a locating pad changed on a blank drawing may affect the first setup without changing the final outside profile. Flag that change for review rather than assuming the previous fixture remains suitable. This is an illustrative handoff issue, not an account of a Jinhua production event.

Use the existing Machined Casting and Machined Forging pages to evaluate the service category. The aluminum die-cast specialist page applies to that specific blank route; an unconfirmed casting method must not be relabeled as die casting.
