ZF34C Forged Sun Gear Shaft Manufacturing

This sun gear shaft is manufactured to customer drawings for planetary gear and power-transmission assemblies. It combines a forged shaft form, gear geometry and controlled machined features in one component. The manufacturing and inspection plan is therefore built around the released drawing, gear quality requirement, datum structure and specified heat-treated condition.

Verified component specification

  • Material: ZF34C alloy steel.
  • Starting form: Forged blank.
  • Heat treatment: Quenching and tempering.
  • Hardness: HB 228–263.
  • Dimensional control: Outer-diameter tolerance of 20 μm.
  • Gear accuracy: Grade 8.

Manufacturing process

Process planning begins with review of the forged blank, machining allowance, gear data and functional datums. The route can coordinate forging, turning, gear cutting, quenching and tempering, finish machining and inspection. The exact operation sequence is confirmed against the drawing so that the specified heat-treated condition, Grade 8 gear requirement and controlled shaft diameter can be evaluated together.

Quenching and tempering requirements

The specified hardness range for this part is HB 228–263 after quenching and tempering. The RFQ should identify the applicable hardness test method and locations, together with any drawing requirements for mechanical properties, distortion control or protected areas. Requirements not stated on the released drawing should be confirmed by the customer before the production route is finalized.

Gear and dimensional inspection

Inspection planning can cover Grade 8 gear accuracy, tooth and datum relationships, outside diameter, runout, faces, shoulders, surface finish and HB hardness. When required by the purchase specification, production documentation can include material certificates, forging records, heat-treatment records, dimensional reports, gear inspection results and agreed traceability records. Sun gear shafts are used within planetary and related power-transmission assemblies. The customer defines mating gear geometry, torque, speed, lubrication, duty cycle, life target and validation requirements.
