Custom Pinion Gear Manufacturing

Jinhua Machinery manufactures pinions to customer drawings for gear, steering and transmission assemblies. The component shown combines external spline features with machined diameters and heat-treated surfaces. Because spline geometry, datums, hardness and mating interfaces affect one another, quotation and process planning are based on the complete released drawing.

Verified component specification

  • Material: Low-carbon steel.
  • Spline forming: Spline rolling and cold forging for two external splines.
  • Machining: Turning, milling and grinding.
  • Heat treatment: Carburizing and quenching with low tempering.
  • Hardness: HRC 58–63.
  • Dimensional control: Outer-diameter tolerance within 12 μm and inner-diameter tolerance within 22 μm.

Manufacturing process

The production route begins with review of the material, spline definitions, datum system and controlled dimensions. Spline rolling and cold forging form the two external spline features. Turning and milling establish the specified shaft geometry, while grinding is used for the features identified in the process plan. Carburizing, quenching and low tempering produce the stated hardness range. Final sequencing and machining allowance are set from the drawing so the heat-treated part can meet its dimensional and spline requirements.

Heat treatment and inspection

The drawing and purchase specification should identify the required hardened zone, case requirements if applicable, test locations and acceptance method. Inspection can include spline geometry, outside and inside diameters, datum-related dimensions, machined surfaces and HRC 58–63 hardness. Material certificates, heat-treatment records, dimensional reports, spline inspection results and traceability records can be included when required by the agreed purchasing specification.

Application review

Pinions of this type are reviewed for gear, steering and transmission assemblies where torque transfer, spline engagement and controlled fits are important. Load, mating geometry, lubrication, service conditions and final design validation remain defined by the customer. Jinhua Machinery’s role is to manufacture and inspect the part to the approved specification.
